A Clean Well Lighted Place Essays

A Clean Well Lighted Place Essays A Clean Well Lighted Place Paper A Clean Well Lighted Place Paper World War people lost hope and Hemingway includes this somber moo d of the lost generation into the lives of his characters. Hemingway repeats the line, a n old man who sat in the shadow of the leaves of the tree made against the electric light in order r to introduce the dark mood of the story which reflects the characters emotions, it underscore s the old mans depth of loneliness and isolation. The shadows outside the cafe represent the dark thoughts that he old man has while the light represents the cafe as a safe place for him. It is the light of course but it is necessary that the place be clean and pleasant. The light is sys embolism because it provides a place of comfort, to get away from the old mans despair. The old mans characterization of darkness is shown through his attempt to commit suicide. This is a common occurrence for people who serve in war. Hemingway alcoholic dependency I s evident in the older man who drinks for the numbness, Hess drunk now, Hess drunk every in HTH, the younger waiter observes. Hemingway includes this information to show the abuse of a School and the reliability the characters have for alcohol. Another aspect of Hemmingway style includes the variation of short and long sentences to demonstrate a realness in the short story. By using this syntax, Hemingway creates the essence of a discussion between two real people through stream of consciousness for the audience to relate to the story and characters. The short responses that both waiters give to one another also wows their interests in the topic of the old mans suicide attempt. The young ere waiter seems to persistently ask questions because he is selfish and nosy, not because the me scions of the old man actually concern him, he should have killed himself last week, he confer sees. Opposing, the older waiter seems to be annoyed by the upbringing of the subject because SE he closely relates to the old man and recognizes from the first that the old mans despair is not a reaction to a material lack but to a basic metaphysical principle. The old waiters analysis o the old man characterizes him as sympathetic because he, too, is scarred by the war. The symbolic darkness that the characters are trying to escape through indulge once of alcohol and by finding light is Nadia. Nadia is the consciousness of knowing that tee are all nothing, It is all a nothing that he knew too well. It was all nothing and a man was nothing too. All the characters introduced in the short story encounter Nadia. For the y nuns waiter, Nadia is his lack of light or insight, for example, the young waiter is unsympathetic t awards the old Nans emotions and he cares only for his desire to go home to his wife.

Enthymeme - Definition and Examples

Enthymeme s In rhetoric, an enthymeme is an informally stated syllogism with an implied premise. Adjective: enthymemic or enthymematic.  Also known as a rhetorical syllogism. Enthymemes are  not merely truncated syllogisms, says Stephen R. Yarbrough. Rhetorical enthymemes reach probable, not necessary conclusions- and they are probable, not necessary, simply because they cannot be governed by the relation of implication, as are all  syllogisms (Inventive Intercourse, 2006). In the Rhetoric, Aristotle observes that enthymemes are the substance of rhetorical persuasion, though he fails to offer a clear definition of the enthymeme. Etymology From the Greek enthymema, piece of reasoning Examples and Observations With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good.   (slogan of Smuckers jams, jellies, and preserves)[M]y parents decide to buy my brothers guns. These are not real guns. They shoot BBs, copper pellets my brothers say will kill birds. Because I am a girl, I do not get a gun.(Alice Walker, Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self. In Search of Our Mothers Gardens. Harcourt Brace, 1983)If you have been healed or saved or blessed through TBN and have not contributed . . . you are robbing God and will lose your reward in heaven.   (Paul Crouch, co-founder of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, quoted by William Lobdell, The Week, Aug. 10, 2007)One of the Soviet Georgias senior citizens thought Dannon was an excellent yogurt. She ought to know. Shes been eating yogurt for 137 years.   (1970s television advertisement for Dannon Yogurt)If its Bordens, its got to be good.   (advertising slogan)Want him to be more of a man? Try being more of a woman!   (advertising slogan for Coty perfum e) An Abbreviated Syllogism In modern times, the enthymeme has come to be regarded as an abbreviated syllogismthat is, an argumentative statement that contains a conclusion and one of the premises, the other premise being implied. A statement like this would be regarded as an enthymeme: He must be a socialist because he favors a graduated income-tax. Here the conclusion (He is a socialist) has been deduced from an expressed premise (He favors a graduated income-tax) and an implied premise (either [a] Anyone who favors a graduated income-tax is a socialist or [b] A socialist is anyone who favors a graduated income-tax).  (Edward P.J. Corbett and Robert J. Connors, Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student, 4th ed. Oxford University Press, 1999) The Persuasive Power of the Enthymeme Aristotle appreciated the persuasive power of enthymeme because he was well aware that when it comes to everyday speaking and writing, an argument doesn’t have to be watertight to be taken seriously. In his treatise On Rhetoric, he offered three important tips to would-be persuaders. What your audience thinks of you really mattersif they don’t trust you, you’re toast [ethos]. What you say, or write, has to make people feel something [pathos]. And your argument must be put together with a particular audience in mind because an argument aimed at every target inevitably misses all of them. The  guess what’s in my head  component of enthymeme makes listening to a speech fun for an audience. And by inviting them to supply the missing piece of an argument, enthymeme fosters a bond of intimacy between speakeror writerand audience. An audience that is actively involved in the creation of a shared messageespecially one that reflects their beliefs and prejudicesi s much more likely to feel the rightness of what is being argued than one that isn’t. For Aristotle, enthymeme was the flesh and blood of proof. Little wonder professional persuaders of all flavors just can’t get enough of them.  (Martin Shovel, Enthymeme, or Are You Thinking What Im Thinking? The Guardian [UK], April 9, 2015) Antonys Enthymeme in Julius Caesar In that form of enthymeme in which one of the premises is omitted, there is a strong tendency to accept the conclusion without scrutinizing the missing premise on which the argument rests. For example, the plebians, swayed by Antony speaking of Caesar, readily take for granted the conclusion he desires: Plebian: Markd ye his words? He would not take the crown. Therefore tis certain he was not ambitious.[William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar III.ii] They do not question the implicit major premise, A man who refuses a crown is not ambitious. They regard the conclusion as certain.  (Sister Miriam Joseph, Shakespeares Use of the Arts of Language, 1947. Reprinted by Paul Dry Books, 2005) President Bushs Enthymeme In an enthymeme, the speaker builds an argument with one element removed, leading listeners to fill in the missing piece. On May 1, speaking from the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln, President Bush said, The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September the 11th, 2001, and still goes on. . . . With those attacks, the terrorists and their supporters declared war on the United States. And war is what they got. This is classic enthymematic argumentation: We were attacked on Sept. 11, so we went to war against Iraq. The missing piece of the argumentSaddam was involved in 9/11didnt have to be said aloud for those listening to assimilate its message.  (Paul Waldman, Washington Post, September, 2003) The Daisy Commercial In 1964, politics flip-flopped, and the choice became Vote Democratic or Die. One of the most controversial commercials ever made showed a pretty little girl, all innocence, picking petals off a daisy in a field. In a small, sweet voice, she counts the petals as she pulls them off, One, two, three... When she gets to ten, the picture is frozen, and a mans grim voice begins to count back down from ten (as in a nuclear blast countdown). At zero, the scene dissolves into a nuclear holocaust. Over the mushrooming cloud President, Lyndon Johnsons voice is heard: These are the stakesto make a world in which all Gods children can live or go into the dark. We must either love each other or we must die. Voters got the message: A vote for Johnsons opponent Goldwater is a vote for dead little girls. At last count, partisans of dead little girlhood did not constitute a large percentage of the electorate.  (Donna Woolfolk Cross, Mediaspeak: How Television Makes Up Your Mind. Coward-McCann, 1983 ) Pronunciation: EN-tha-meem

Debating Cinema and Time in film Inception Essay

Debating Cinema and Time in film Inception - Essay Example The approach that is given to Inception by Christopher Nolan conforms to the perspective of the theory of Bernani and Dutoit as portrayed in their book,-the approach given by the movie make the possibility of being to be put at great stake. Nolan also in hi movie, inception uses the theory that states that film using the ‘general apparatus’ are predetermined to guarantee production of a subject that dominates an ideology. Throughout the movie, there are breath-taking special effects coupled with unbelievable twists and turns. The film man referred to as Batman: the dark night and the Prestige are rated to be brilliant with the ability to create a world within a world with the masterpiece. Even though it is a little bit difficult to understand the movie, it has managed what very many directors are yearning for; the ability to leave the audience in need of more and continues with the talk about the movies weeks after watching it. There are creative camera works that has be en used in the development of the movie and this is what contributes to the peculiarity of the movie. For instance, when Leonardo and his partner Arthur visited Saito with their proposal for a dream to steal, the camera work involved in the scene is one of the very rare uses of 180 degrees. The use of 180 degrees do create the realism that there is a discussion going on while in the real sense it is just the use of two cameras on the opposites to create an impression that there is a discussion taking place. Usually, 180 degrees shot is to make shots that are close up in nature and will allow the audience to construe the characters emotional state and not the entire shooting scene. This camera work was used in the movie to depict the three men sat in a round table discussing. Apart from the 180 degrees rule, the director of the movie also used some other unique styles of expressing the facial expression of two characters talking; this involved the use of ‘shot reverse shot†™ which is able to move back and forth between two characters to depict that they are in a conversation. This technique also uses the 180 degrees rule to show a conversation between two people by moving the camera back and forth between the two people so that the audience can connect with the facial reaction of the characters talking (McCormick, 2004). This technique has been perfectly used in the movies where two people are discussing or talking in a way that it brings out the sense of conversation that connects easily with the audience. In the film, most of the shots are long shots, medium shots, and close shots meant to bring in varieties in the movies, this works well in keeping the audience interested about the movies and avoid tension building in the audience since they are fully aware of the happenings. The closes up shots are used particularly when the intended purpose is to depict the facial expression of the audience such as reactions and emotional state. In this case, t he close up shots works to pass important information to the audience and about the character of the individuals as well as what they think. Close up shots in this regard can also be used to bring into focus some of the important characters in the movies and to which the audience should pay more attention to and follow because they are

Nursing Infomatics Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Nursing Infomatics - Assignment Example Nursing informatics is concerned with the question, "How many times does a nurse have to click a mouse" (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). The need for nurses to be technologically savvy is more important than ever. Nursing informatics can help patients receive a better quality of care. Nursing informatics includes "how nurses gather and record information tohelp improve patient health care" (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). What does nursing informatics include Nursing informatics includes: "implementation of information technologyoptimizing information management and communication[and utilizing] electronic records" (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). Why is this included in the curriculum Nursing informatics should be included in the curriculum because all nurses in practice today should be familiar with how to use technology in the workplace in order to help their patients and make everyones' lives more efficient and easier. Whether it be use of an IV pump or an electronic thermometer, every technology makes things easier for the nurse and the nurse is always going to encounter technology on-the-job (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). This makes the necessity of including informatics in the nursing curriculum even more important. As technology changes, so does the field of nursing. ... 1). This makes the necessity of including informatics in the nursing curriculum even more important. The good informatics nurse "understands theory, implementation, [and] evaluating outcomes" (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). This is what the curriculum will teach the nursing student. As technology changes, so does the field of nursing. Although there is no way to predict what the future holds in technology, the role of the nurse in informatics is to continually be attempting to bridge the gap between technology and clinical practice, communicating with both arenas (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). So what lies in the future The future of informatics is to create a more efficient health care system with information technology, specifically: systems that are multi-layered so there are no separate electronic charts; synthesization and interfacing systems which are seamless; basic language within a unified system; and best practices in informatics (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). How can one expect a nursing student to benefit from taking this course The answer is simple: patient care will be improved. As one nurse said it best, "The more we have at our fingertipsthe better we are going to be able to take care of that patient" (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). C. How this Course Fits with the Philosophy of the Nursing Program and College as a Whole. Nurses today must be trained so that they are competent when they go out into the field. Nurses are often the "liaison between information technology and real nursing" (Giannini, 2010, p. 1). In order that competent nurses are trained properly with regard to technology, all nursing curricula should include a course on nursing informatics. A competent individual in nursing informatics is

The Norton Introduction to Literature Essay Example for Free

The Norton Introduction to Literature Essay My Papas Waltz was written by Theodore Roethke in XXXX. Many critics believe that â€Å"My Papas Waltz† lacks the strength of Roethkes later works like â€Å"The Lost Son† and â€Å"The North American Sequence. † However, this particular poem is one of Roethkes most well loved, read, and discussed pieces of poetry. The narrators ambiguous recounting of his fathers waltz causes drastically different interpretations of the exact meaning of the poem. Many people claim that it is a tender poem of a positive interaction between a father and son and a joyful childhood memory. While still others believe that it is a sad retelling of the abuse of a child by his drunken father. â€Å"My Papas Waltz† is a solid example of how poetry can be greatly influenced by the readers past. It was Roethkes goal to create a piece of prose which was not his alone but belong also to the reader and his/her personal experience. He leaves the poem open for interpretation by the use of several literary devices. The duplicity of meaning in â€Å"My Papas Waltz† is supported by Roethkes use of meter, alliteration , and juxtaposition of images. â€Å"My Papas Waltz† offers such strikingly different responses from readers that often the technical grace of Roethke is overlooked. This poem is short in length it is rich in several traditional and strict approaches to poetry. Alliteration is when the initial sounds of words are similar and place together. In line 4, â€Å"Such waltzing was not easy. † Here the repetition of the gentle â€Å"w† contrasts the simile of death used in line 3. The alliteration gives the impression that the waltz peaceful however when combined with the idea of death, it is clear that the waltz is â€Å"not easy†. See more: how to write an academic introduction â€Å"My mothers countenance / Could not unfrown itself† (lines 7-8) has the alliteration of the hard â€Å"c† sound. Compared that hard sound to the joyful stanza it is found in. The â€Å"c† becomes a sign of caution and carefulness. In lines 9-10, â€Å"The hand that held my wrist / Was battered on one knuckle; â€Å" the placement of the words hand and held together create a soft sound which contrasts the image of the â€Å"battered knuckle. † The use of alliteration allows the reader to interpret the actions within the poem as lighthearted or abusive. Image is another literary device used to create duplicity of meaning. The images of â€Å"dancing† together, a positive interaction, juxtaposed by the bruised knuckles is suggestive of violence. This negative interpretation is further supported by the image of the father holding not the sons hand but his wrist. This is a much more aggressive act than hand holding and gives the impression that perhaps the child is being forced to dance. In lines 13-14, â€Å"You beat time on my head / With a palm caked hard by dirt,† is once again an image of violence. It is obvious that the narrator could mean â€Å"keep time† instead of â€Å"beat time†. In which case, the image suggest a father playing the drums lightly on his sons head. However, the introduction of the word â€Å"beat† creates a rough tone to the lines and references in sound the word â€Å"battered â€Å" from line 10. Meter allows the reader a choice of what the poem truly means. The true skill of Rothkes meter is often missed if â€Å"My Papas Waltz† is not read out loud. Roethke uses patterns of syllables to parallel the actual movement of the waltz. For example in line 1-2, â€Å"The whiskey on your breath / Could make a small boy dizzy;† but should be read with the following emphasizes â€Å"The whiskey on your breath / Could make a small boy dizzy†. The meter continues as above and rhyme scheme traditionally known as iambic trimeter. However, in line 11, mid way through the poem and continuing throughout the rest of the poem the meter is slightly different from the waltz. Roethke here is trying to mirror the appearance of a drunk man trying to do the waltz. In line 14, there is a complete break in the rhythm of the poem because there is an extra syllable. The word â€Å"hard† is not necessary at all. Remove hard from the line, and it still makes sense. The interruption of meter which mirrors the units of three that compose the waltz draws attention to that line. The reader must question why is the author giving that line special attention. One conclusion is that the poem is not about a son dancing with his tipsy father but with a child enduring regular physical abuse. Another viewpoint is that it represents another silly misstep by the father that the son enjoys. Through the use of several literary devices Roethke creates a piece of poetry which is technically perfect and thematically ambiguous. Alliteration was used to create dual meaning by pairing soft sounds with harsh images. Images of tender moments between father and son were juxtaposed with violently aggressive words. The poem parallels the actual steps of the waltz which contrasts striking with the slurred actions of a drunk father. With the use of alliteration, images, and meter, Roethke allows the poetry to be unclear which forces the reader to make up his own mind about the content and theme of the poem. One of the goals of modern literature and therefore modern authors was not to merely describe their environments or their emotions. But to inspire, evoke, and tempt the reader. Roethkes wanted to not only reach his audience but include his audience in the creation of the poetry. Certainly, by writing â€Å"My Papas Waltz† which offers dual meaning, he allows for all his readers to gain a different understanding of his writing. He effects readers with a great childhood by writing a poem which is lighthearted and nostalgic for their younger years. He also effects readers who have some form of abuse in their childhoods by assuring them by the retelling of his story that they are not alone in their experiences. The most important influence of â€Å"My Papas Waltz† is its ability to stimulate conversation and debate between different readers. It is in the absence of choice by the author that allows the freedom of choice for the audience. Roethkes breathes new life into the oldest theme in literature – appearance versus reality. In life very few things are ever as they appear. People, relationships, and memory are multi-layered and extremely complicated. Perhaps Roethkes true intention was to create a piece of writing which explores the ambiguous nature of memory and suggests that remembering is neither good or bad and but a simple combination of both. Skloot introduces her obsession with Henrietta Lacks by saying â€Å"I’ve spent years staring at that photo, wondering [†¦] growing in laboratories now than there ever were in her body† [Skloot 2]. As one of the chapters quotes, â€Å"Henrietta Lacks was born Loretta Pleasant in Roanoke, Virginia, on August 1, 1920.† [Skloot 18]. She went to Johns Hopkins Hospital claiming that she has a knot inside her womb, but the doctors did not take any action. Skloot also interviews Henrietta’s relatives, Johns Hopkins Hospital’s doctors, and other people that have knowledge of Henrietta Lacks that are necessary to write this novel. As a Private Investigator

As a Private Investigator, my work is basically on the aspect of uncovering the truths and primarily using any means just to discover everything that I needed to know. With the use of observation or any particular thing that can help me pursue my investigation, I then carry out the cases that are to be investigated. The nature of my work would probably include the irregular time of work and that includes any time of the day, may it be during early in the morning, late in the evening, or even in holidays. This kind of system is just normal for investigators like me because for one, the subjects of my investigation process might not be available during the normal hours that's why we must be able to adjust to the time whenever they are availbale. In obtaining the facts, there different methods that can be used. We can use cellular phones, video or still cameras, computers, and others to get hold of the facts there we're up to. We can also attain necessary information by interviewing peopl e, doing several researches, and reviewing public documents. But for whatever facts we may acquire, we must verify them first to be sure that it is genuine or accurate for that matter. Apparently, as Private Investigators, we should be accountable for the things that we are investigating in.   To sum it up, being a Private Investigator isn't that easy and a lot of hard work is really a necessary. For those who don't have any single idea on what being a Private Investigator is, I can somehow impart to them some important details on what this is all about. As for me, I strongly believe that this particular job is a kind of job wherein one can get innumerable satisfaction just by getting the information that are needed by our clients. This is a job wherein we help people with uncertainties who finds answers to the questions they badly need and want to know. Our duties, however, may always depend on our client's demand. In my work as a Private Investigator, I have my duties and responsibi lities to let the people, who don't have any clue on what it is to work as a Private Investigator but are interested to work in this kind of job, be aware of the necessary stuffs that come with this certain profession. They have to be mindful that in order to survive this work, they must be able to think on his or her feet which means he must be alert at all times whenever he or she's on his duty as a Private Investigator. An average working day for a person who has a profession like mine is normally spent scrutinizing things around me especially certain things which have something to do about the case that I'm working on.I usually deal with various environments and some of those are somehow dangerous in nature especially when a particular case involves confrontation. In cases such those, what I am just doing is just deal with that particular circumstance and the consequences that may arise. There is, however, a downside in this certain profession. Because at the end of the day, I some how felt weak for some reasons like not being able to be apreciated no matter how hard you worked for a certain case or simply just being tired because of the nature of the work itself.Yet no matter how hard or tiring my work may be, it is still overwhelming that after all my hard works and perseverance in the things I have done, I know for myself that I did my best to come up with a good job.A simple tap on my back from someone is such a big reward for me because it is just an evidence that I am being appreciated for the works I have done that entire day. Moreover, the most important thing about here is the respect I gain not only from my co-workers but entirely from the people who know the nature of my work as well.

Genre Analysis Essay

Whenever we get sick, we see a doctor. We go to see a doctor to get a prescription to a drug which will make us better. We take the drug until we are better and once we are we store the drug in a cabinet for later. Many of us do not know that by keeping the unused drugs we are putting people around us in danger; especially children and teens. Children and teens are more curious to try the drugs and see the different reactions to their body not knowing one can be fatal and the other addicting. A lot of people do not notice the severity of leaving such powerful drugs unattended and are later faced with the terrible consequences of their actions. Due to recent cases of prescription drug abuse, the media is sending out to messages to make the public aware of the problem and show the different ways that it can be prevented. These messages or genres play an important part in the audience response. Credibility, image, words, and color will structure the message and see how effective it is. Using two different genres one will be more effective than the other and communicate the message more effectively. Autism is the outcome of a neurological problem that has an impact on the normal functioning of the brain, influencing development of the individual’s social interaction and communication abilities. Autistic individuals have problems with non-verbal communication, a broad array of social activities and interaction. A form of autism that Christopher Boone has is called Asperger Syndrome (AS), which is, according to Rogers and Myles, a developmental impairment that is identified by disabilities in nonverbal and verbal communication and social interactions and by limiting, recurring activities, interests, and behavior. People with AS are deficient of vital social abilities, have a restricted capacity to participate in give-and-take communication, and have difficulty understanding the traditional or implicit rules of behavior and communication. Asperger Syndrome may bring about the utmost impairment throughout one’s life span when social interaction is the way toward every accomplishment (Lathe 2006). Haddon’s creation of Christopher as a fairly unusual person has appealed considerably to parents who have children with AS and certainly with medical organizations and social workers with substantial involvement in the arena of disability in general.
